Spinal Decompression Therapy

A non-surgical, FDA-cleared technology that uses precise mechanical traction to reduce intradiscal pressure, promote healing, and relieve nerve compression.

How It Works

Mechanism of Action

Spinal decompression creates negative pressure within the disc (up to -150 mmHg), drawing herniated or bulging disc material back toward the center. That negative pressure also promotes diffusion of water, oxygen and nutrients into the disc, facilitating repair. The treatment cycles between distraction and relaxation to prevent muscle guarding.

Indications

Conditions It Helps

Herniated and bulging discs

Degenerative disc disease

Sciatica

Spinal stenosis

Facet syndrome

Post-surgical disc pain

Who It's Best For

  • Patients with confirmed disc pathology
  • Those who have failed other conservative care
  • Patients wanting to avoid surgery
  • Active individuals needing to return to function

Who It's Not For

  • Patients with spinal fractures
  • Severe osteoporosis
  • Spinal tumors
  • Pregnant patients
  • Surgical hardware at the target level
Evidence

What the Research Says

Clinical studies have shown mechanical spinal decompression can reduce disc herniation size by up to 90% on post-treatment MRI. A study in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders showed significant improvement in pain, disability and quality of life in patients with lumbar disc herniation treated with decompression therapy.

What to Expect

What a Session Feels Like

You lie comfortably on the decompression table while a harness is fitted around your pelvis. The computer-controlled system applies gentle, progressive traction. Most patients describe it as a deep stretch and many fall asleep during treatment. Sessions typically last 20-30 minutes.

Timeline

Treatment Timeline

A typical protocol involves 12-20 sessions over 4-8 weeks depending on severity. Most patients report noticeable improvement within the first 4-6 sessions. Decompression is often combined with laser therapy and corrective exercise.
